Listen To Your SkinFunctions Of The Skin
The skin fulfils a number of important functions. It forms a protective coat from the outside world shielding us from attach from bacteria and viruses. It contains the pigment melanin which protects us from ultraviolet radiation. It is also a major organ of elimination through sweating out toxins and sloughing off dead skin cells.
The skin plays an important role in temperature regulation, it also serves as a primary sensory organ, it can sense touch, pain, heat, cold and pressure. In addition a number of immune responses occur in the skin.
Finally, the skin is the interface between our consciousness and the outside world, the vehicle through which we express, communicate and perceive. The psychological relationship between the skin and the individual is deep and complex. An individual expresses and experience much of their self-image through the skin.
Herbal remedies have a lot to offer in treating skin conditions. Because there maybe a number of different under lying factors causing the skin condition, the trained herbalist will always seek to take a holistic approach and treat the person as whole, both body and mind.
While some herbs maybe given to treat the condition topically and give local effect (like Chickweed to relieve itching), the main focus of the herbal remedies will be on cleaning and healing from the inside out. Alterative herbs will be the corners stone of any fundamental healing transformation. Other classifications of herbs included in a well balanced and blended remedy will include Anti-inflammatory herbs, Anti-microbial, Astringents, Vulnerary, Lymphatic tonics, Nervines, Diuertics and Hepatic herbs.
In formulating an herbal remedy, not only is the skin taken into account but the health and state of the digestion system, the function of the kidneys and liver, elimination from the lungs and colon – an imbalance in any of these systems and organ can have a negative impact on the skin. Stress, emotions and lifestyle are also considered important.
Some individual herbs used in the remedy would include Red Clover, Chickweed, Cleavers, Nettles, Burdock, Oregon Grape, Plantain, Skullcap, Valerian, but to name a few.
Depending on the condition and the under lying triggers certain changes in the diet may help. Jethro Kloss suggests for skin infections a fruit diet for a while to help clear the skin. Some common triggers include dairy, eggs, cheese, sugar and food additives and it may be best to avoid these during a skin eruption.
In general a low-fat, low salt, high fibre diet. Sunflower seeds high in essential fatty acids. A gluten free diet has proven successful in some cases. Plenty of fresh raw fruit and vegetables, plenty of water. Get into the habit of juicing at home yourself.
Foods to avoid include greasy foods, pastries, sweets, white flour products, white sugar products, anything with artificial colourings and flavourings.
The key to healing is to take a holistic approach to your health.
